Highway Driving Safely and Economically
I consider myself a careful highway driver. I don’t take chances. Not too fast, but fast enough, so that I do not represent a road block to the normal flow of traffic. Driving too slow can create tensions in the minds of the drivers behind, and they can take excessive risks in passing the “slow-poke.” A slow poke is a driver who travels 10-15 K below the suggested speed limit.
In 2008 the price of gasoline reached $1.40 per litre. Speeding up and slowing down by using the brake takes an excessive amount of gas and the mechanics at my dealer suggested when driving on the highway to use the “cruise control to save money on gasoline. I had often looked at this apparatus on the steering wheel but I never used it on a regular basis
And then I did, and a new world of highway driving opened up. When I get to the highway, I set the cruise control at the speed limit, pull over to the right side of the highway and enjoy a complete tension free trip to my destination. I move to the left side only when a driver is below the speed limit and I am forced to pass. What surprises me is that many drivers feel under some compulsion to pass me, but I feel secure and safe driving on the right side at the speed limit, tension free.
