SPEED LIMITS -MONEYMAKERS FOR GOVERNMENT

Speed limits on Ontario Freeways were lowered from 70 miles per hour (113 km/h) to 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) during the 1970s energy crisis and remained at the nearest equivalent  (100km/h) upon conversion to metric measurements in 1977. Have you ever driven on  Highway 400, stayed on the speed limit of 100 km/h on the right-hand side of the highway and watched  at least 95% of the cars pass you. I love “cruise control” because I can relax and can rest assured that I will not get a speeding ticket ,but I am an old codger of 85 and speeding does not turn me on. Not so for the majority of drivers who love to drive a little faster.. The government contends that speeding kills, but I have never seen statistics that speeding causes more accidents. Speed limits vary throughout the world but Ontario is amoung the lowest. The speed limits in many  countries on major highways are more than Ontario  . Argentina  130, France 130, Germany 130 and on some roads no limit, Israel 110, Turkey 120 and Poland 140. Rest assured I am not calling for too high speed limits but the limit we have here is too low

In Ontario, “speed too fast” is responsible for just 2.1% of road fatalities, while speeding for 55.4% of all driving convictions. In Canada , Alberta, British Colombia, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan  have higher limits on major highways. An Ontario-based group is lobbying to increase speed limits from 100 km/h to 130km/h . Lower speed limits in city residential areas and near schools makes sense, but lower limits on major highways only makes money, for the Ontario government.
