PASSWORDS-SECURITY CAUSES CHAOS
The modern world requires young supple minds and sometimes even that does not help. I have been aware of the problem for me for a few years, but an experience in trying to buy a book from Amazon both by telephone and computer placed the issue, front and centre, for my 85 year old brain. Here is what happened. I received as a gift a book called “ADVANTAGE CANADA” which as any tennis fan might know involved the history of tennis in our country. I thought I would buy a book for an acquaintance of mine in the tennis world. The book was published by McGraw, Hill, Ryerson a publishing firm which I found out had left Canada many years ago and had only a phone number left to this country. When I phoned McGraw I was informed the book had been discontinued but it was possible that Amazon a mail-order firm might have a few in stock. I phoned them and they had one book in stock but I had to be a member to buy it. I assumed I was not a member but after signing up with my e-mail , they found many years ago I had joined but of course I had no idea what my password was. We had to sign me up again, with a new password and after an hour on the phone the issue was resolved. And then it hit me. I had passwords for twitter, York racquets Facebook Linked-in my, e-mail, my blog ,Bell, PayPal, Munk centre and who know how many else. If I made a list and put them all in a file in my computer, if I was hacked they hackers would have it all and of course I am not counting my bank. The issue is getting out of hand, and the older one gets, it becomes worse. Security is important but for how many companies and for how long. I am not going to worry, I won`t be here to suffer.
