SLAVERY IS NOT QUITE DEAD

It was reported in local newspapers April 14 2010 that in Kandahar Afghanistan ,a gunman lying in wait, shot and killed an 18 year old girl as she left her job at a U.S. development company, casting a spotlight on a stepped up campaign of the Taliban to intimidate women. What could this young innocent girl have done to be executed in such a brazen and open manner? Nothing more than learning a new language, and having a job outside the control of men in her family.

Recently there were many letters to the editor criticizing the presence of Canadian troops in this country. What are they going to accomplish? To these letter writers it is a waste of lives and money. I could not agree less. Women represent 50% of the world’s human beings and in this day and age societies that leave them literally as sex slaves cannot be allowed to exist without challenge. The problem lies with the U.N. All the human rights edicts issued by this organization count for nothing as the organization will not interfere in the internal affairs of a state. The governments of most Islamic states place women on a very inferior level. I resent the European countries who will not help the U.S. and Canada in their fight against the Taliban terrorist regime. How hypocritical that France bans the wearing of the niqab in dealing with public institutions yet takes very little action in Afghanistan. It is worth while for Canada to use the troops, if nothing more than to free the women in Afghanistan, and give them an opportunity to be educated and make a success of their lives.

Am I naïve?
