TEACHERS DON`T FIRE EASILY

There is no argument with the theses that the longest-lasting effects of a good education take place in the primary and secondary schools of Canada. As well from my own experience as a student in the public system, the ability of teachers to educate varies from teacher to teacher and even from ,day to day, with the same teacher. The enthusiasm and ability of teachers will never be a constant. Equally, the students vary from one with an extreme dedication and a very high I.Q. to students of modest ability and desire. The home environment also plays a prominent role in the successful end of a student`s education. Getting the most from our students is a complicated procedure.

I came from a broken immigrant home and my mother and grand-mother as much as they loved me had no expertise in making sure I was getting the best of my education. In grade 7 of Orde St public school, I failed miserably, and as I recall the teacher in charge could not have cared less. This particular teacher did not have the personality to instill in me the desire to act responsibly. And then my education miracle happened. My mother re-married and we moved into a new home and environment where my new brothers studied, and I had 2 role-models. As well my new teacher at Clinton St. P.S. did not accept flimsy excuses for not learning and I was put into a situation that led me to succeed ,and succeed I did. I passed my high school matriculation with 1 st class honours.

In Alberta, a provincial task force has called for a recertification of teachers every five years. Their union calls it an attack on the full integrity of their profession. It probably can be viewed as such, depending on whether you are in the profession or a parent looking for educated kids.

The world is a competitive place and for a successful country, education is paramount.  As an example a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research in 2011, looked at 2.5 million American school children and found the benefits of having a good teacher are lifelong and profound.

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to weed out incompetent teachers, who underperform, or for that matter to reward those that are excellent .

Because of the many variables in the school environment being placed in a class-room with a motivated dedicated teacher is strictly a matter of luck.

Short Bio: I was born in Toronto in 1931 to a wonderful mother who divorced shortly before my birth. I owe a great deal of my success to her. I am Jewish but not at all religious, yet my culture plays an important part of my personality. I attended Harbord Collegiate and U. of T. Faculty of Pharmacy. A unique mail-order pharmacy was the first of my endeavours in the profession, followed by many stores throughout Ontario. I have a loving wife, 3 children and grand-children and I am now retired from pharmacy. But what do I write about? Everything! My topics are funny, serious, whimsical, timely, outrageous, inspiring, and inventive. I promise that if you take the time to read any one of these topics – you will not be sorry.
