BASEBALL- PRACTICE IMPORTANT but not EXERCISE and FITNESS
Baseball is more like a game of skill than a sport. When I think of the work put in by athletes in hockey, football and basketball to get fit, and I look at the bodies of baseball players, I cannot help coming to the conclusion that working out is not a priority. I was a pretty good baseball player but I can never remember being told by my coach to exercise.. I was a catcher and what was important was being able to throw the ball to the bases and of course catch the ball as thrown by the pitcher. To-day I watched the 4th game of the meeting between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas rangers and of course the Jays won. But this time I looked very closely at the players and their bodies. There were a lot of very bulky bodies who were, without doubt, very strong but in my estimation not fit people. The observations I made were as follows. Everybody spitted at least once or twice when they were on camera. When you are playing on grass and dirt, that is possible, but not on a basketball court. These men are very agile in order to pick up ground balls but when you observe the game most of the players at any time are stationary. Baseball is a game where there is little or no physical contact and that is part of the rules. One other point I would like to make. Because of the information on a computer , statistics become an important part of the action. For instance, I learned in watching the game that R.A. Dickey a Jay pitcher is the oldest player to start in a divisional play-off game in the post season. Interesting but only as another piece of information that is only incidentally part of the game.
