MASTERPIECE PAINTINGS–WHY?

What constitutes a masterpiece painting? According to the Oxford dictionary it is a work of outstanding artistry, skill or workmanship. I have no argument with that definition, but a masterpiece  is also a work of art that can sell for thousands or even millions. Why does a work by a very qualified painter only sell for 100`s of dollars and a masterpiece can sell for 100`s of millions. I do not claim, even remotely, to be a connoisseur of paintings but there must be a reason why a painting of two qualified artists, painting in the same era, where one can be judged a masterpiece and the other just a good painting . Here’s how it works, all according to my judgement.

A painter does a good piece of work describing a landscape. His work appears in a show of art. I buy it. If I buy it and other people in our community who have the same standing as myself buy it, rest assured, it will never qualify as a masterpiece. But if a leader in the community decides to buy this painting it is on the way to be a qualified masterpiece. What is  required is for other people who have standing in the business or art world to buy it and the price will rise steadily and gain status as the work of a great artist. When the painter dies or stops painting , over the years and with inflation the value of the particular artist`s painting will gain in value as no more work of that particular person is being produced. I contend that there are many great artists who never attain status because their work was never bought by the right people usually the rich and well known.
