CANADA “ALONE” CANNOT CHANGE THE ENVIRONMENT

Last week (the third week in March) of 2016, I heard on the C.B.C. Peter Mansbridge interviewing David Suzuki. As we all know Peter is a very prominent interviewer on the Canadian network and has his own show “One On One” where he interviews prominent people. David is a renowned environmental scientist who for many years has been haranguing the Canadian public that action must be taken immediately to save our planet from environmental degradation . Mr Suzuki is flogging a dead horse, not that he is not touching a real issue, but Canada alone cannot influence the world .

Human nature cannot change, I am talking about all humans, but a person in an individual situation can. We all seek “POWER, HAVE SELF-INTEREST , and will use HYPOCRISY and LYING” to achieve our ends. Sometimes more and sometimes less. The Canadian people are very realistic and understand just what they can or cannot accomplish. I would like to throw out some statistics. Canada has a population  of approximately 32 million, China 1 Billion, 400 hundred million, India 1 Billion 326 million and the little U.S.A. has 324 million, 10times the population of Canada. All countries mentioned are industrialized and use petroleum products, which are the source of creating pollution for heat, travel,  communication and industry. I would like Mr Suzuki to tell the Canadian people how our minuscule country can lead the world in fighting pollution. Something MUST be done but it has to be accomplished by all the world working together through an organization like the U.N. A realistic Canadian has to think that ruining our lifestyle to achieve essentially no reduction in pollution is a waste of time. Two things must happen before changes come. Firstly, we feel we can have a similar lifestyle using non-polluting products or the world is so polluted there is no choice but to head in that direction

Yesterday Oct 28,2016, Brian Mulroney the former Prime Minister of Canada was interviewed and he criticized the government of Justin Trudeau  for going too far, too fast to solve the pollution problem in Canada. Our companies are in competition with the Americans and they must be kept competitive. Going it alone will not only not work, for the environment, it could drive our companies into bankruptcy.

  • I get what you’re saying Murray. I used to be someone who didn’t care about environmental issues. I didn’t even recycle. Perhaps I was just too lazy to get an extra bin or go to a recycling center. Whatever the reason I started reading more blogs (basically like yours) and getting info from others. The news can tell you anything, but it makes a difference coming from fellow citizens. You’re right that 1 person can change. If me changing a few habits help make the environment better I’m happy.

    • Whether the environment is changing because of human activity or is changing due to natural conditions is not the issue. One cannot tell for sure. But cutting down carbon in the atmosphere can only do good.

  • I don’t care too much about the environment. I mean I don’t litter or pollute, but when it comes to climate change and all these other big issues, I just don’t get it. Maybe that’s why I don’t care much about it. As long as we’re still living aren’t we ok? Do we really need to know all this other stuff?

    • I am not sure that humans are responsible for the problems with the environment, but rest assured the earth is getting warmer. Look at the shoreline of some countries. But scientist can see there is no question that Carbon influences the environment so governments should get together and see if they can lower the carbon output by law. The individual just does what they are doing now. The rich countries will have to pay off the poor ones to get their cooperation

  • You’re right Murray, it’s going to take a group effort. 1 country cannot do everything by itself. Canada can play a major role in changing the environment, but will need support from other countries.
