“CAROL”– A MOVIE THAT HIGHLIGHTS CHANGE–“LESBIANISM”

On occasion I see a movie that touches my sense of the changes that envelop the world I live in. Such is the movie “CAROL”. It stars Cate Blanchett as Carol who gives her name to the film, and Rooney Mara as Therese , her lover. If I were a movie critic I would see the movie as slow moving with not enough dialogue. Mostly lustful looks! The acting of all the  players  was especially good. But I am not a movie critic but a student of human nature, and what was so insightful in the movie was , in my lifetime the change of attitude of western civilization towards homosexuality. The action in the movie takes place in the mid twentieth century.

Carol, is a well-off woman, married with a young child who is separated from her husband but not divorced. Her husband and she share the care of their child. Early in her life she had had a relationship with her cousin, a woman, but had not had any partner recently. Then in a gift store she meets Therese who is employed there. Therese is much younger and especially beautiful and the attraction between the two women is instantaneous. Therese because she is so beautiful is attractive to all young men, but for reasons not really explained is not interested in settling down in a traditional marriage. Carol`s  husband catches them in Carol`s apartment together, and he sees an opportunity to essentially black-mail Carol into coming back to him, by threatening a divorce without visitation rights for Carol. Both the lawyer for Carol and Carol`s lawyer think he could succeed in his attempt. The movie takes place in and around  1950 but what I took from the movie was the realization how much acceptable behaviour has changed. Today no court would prevent a Lesbian from seeing her daughter just because of her sexual orientation.

Short Bio: I was born in Toronto in 1931 to a wonderful mother who divorced shortly before my birth. I owe a great deal of my success to her. I am Jewish but not at all religious, yet my culture plays an important part of my personality. I attended Harbord Collegiate and U. of T. Faculty of Pharmacy. A unique mail-order pharmacy was the first of my endeavours in the profession, followed by many stores throughout Ontario. I have a loving wife, 3 children and grand-children and I am now retired from pharmacy. But what do I write about? Everything! My topics are funny, serious, whimsical, timely, outrageous, inspiring, and inventive. I promise that if you take the time to read any one of these topics – you will not be sorry.
