POLICE “CARDING” IS PROBABLY OPPORTUNISM NOT RACISM
Police are human. They want to succeed. They have higher-ups and other police to impress. It is a well known fact that blacks are numerically above the average in prison. When they see a black person, usually a male, they feel that there is a better chance this person has done wrong. They stop him . Ask questions. For most blacks it is very embarrassing. It is wrong but if it did not work POLICE WOULD NOT DO IT. There is another reason I believe police are not racist. There are many black police officers. If an individual officer was a racist, he or she would alienate other black policemen, not a good idea. If the authorities can prove a person in the force is a racist, fire him or her immediately.
An article in the National Post written after the Baltimore fiasco outlines the plan of the new Toronto police chief Mark Saunders. He stated “It wasn`t that what we were doing was catastrophic”. It`s that there was room for improvement, and that’s what we`re doing. We`re in the process of improving how we do our job” Mark Saunders is the first black police chief in Toronto and he was addressing the Second African Canadian Summit. In this address he did not use the word “carding” but used it after in the Q&A period.
