MENTAL ILLNESS IS NOT THE SAME

What do I mean by that statement. It should be obvious. Humans cannot escape illness, but certain types are more socially acceptable to the world. Mental Illness is not that acceptable. It cannot be readily defined and people facing it are not very likely to broadcast the news to friends and relatives. Mental Illness , and you are going to be surprised, is the leading cause of death in Canada. The majority of people living with a mental illness cannot afford the hundreds of dollars to visit a social worker and their visits should be covered by public health as are psychiatrists. As well so many mentally ill people are unemployed and underemployed. The government spends 51 Billion dollars a year on treating mental illness, but the treatment is reactionary not proactive. Is it possible to change direction? I am not sure. It is so difficult to diagnose mental illness. Where does the health worker draw the line between a worker who is a little odd but are they mentally ill? Is a hyperactive person mentally ill?  Is a seriously depressed person mentally ill? When the tests to measure mental illness are so vague how do you do an accurate diagnosis?  It is difficult and can lead to major financial problems for the health care budget.

Name: Murray Rubin

Short Bio: I was born in Toronto in 1931 to a wonderful mother who divorced shortly before my birth. I owe a great deal of my success to her. I am Jewish but not at all religious, yet my culture plays an important part of my personality. I attended Harbord Collegiate and U. of T. Faculty of Pharmacy. A unique mail-order pharmacy was the first of my endeavours in the profession, followed by many stores throughout Ontario. I have a loving wife, 3 children and grand-children and I am now retired from pharmacy. But what do I write about? Everything! My topics are funny, serious, whimsical, timely, outrageous, inspiring, and inventive. I promise that if you take the time to read any one of these topics – you will not be sorry.
